Hold Present Position

James Albright (a former G450 driver)

The G450 has turned holding from what used to be a mental exercise to just a few key strokes. But we rarely get an opportunity to "hold at current position" so when the time comes it is easy to forget how it is done. I think if you remember two things you will figure it out: (1) Start with the DIR key to get things started, and (2) Remember the HOLD goes over Line Select Key 1L (the "From" waypoint).

Everything here is from the references shown below, with a few comments in an alternate color.

For a G450 published holding pattern see: G450 Hold as Published.

For holding procedures in general, see: Holding.

The procedure to hold at present position is listed in the operating manual. An example follows.

  • The HOLDING PATTERN page with *PPOS (present position) as the holding fix is displayed. Make any necessary changes.

  • Note: Holding at the present position can only be done when LNAV is captured and the cross track error is less than 0.25 NM.

  • Select ACTIVATE (6R) or CLEAR (6L).

The resulting holding pattern is shown at the top of the page. The "High Holding Grd Spd" message is because we were doing 330 knots at the time.
